Rice Cultivation is essential in Toraja. All the funeral/ death rituals are spiritually connected with the rice cultivation and harvest. Manene for instance is only allowed to be celebrated before new cultivation and after the harvest.
Tongkonan is the traditional ancestral house, or rumah adat of the Torajan people, it is the center of life and has a deep spiritual significance for the Torajans. Tongkonan have a distinguishing boat-shaped and oversized saddleback roof and are traditionally build with Bamboo.
