• Deep Well Near Bedo: The deep well in Voreha provides crucial water for the Mikea. Despite the village’s proximity, they are 10 km away from the well, with no Zebu to carry water. Instead, they rely on Babo roots for water, as rainwater can only be collected with homemade molds during the short rainy season.

The Mikea’s ancestral land is now part of a contested national park. The MNP evicted the Mikea decades ago, not due to any wrongdoing, but because Tandroy tribesmen from the South, migrating due to droughts, practice slash-and-burn agriculture, stressing the environment. As a result, the Mikea were forced to relocate to the edges of the forest like here in Bedo. At first, the village appears to be home to 30 families, but it’s actually made up of five clans spread across roughly 10 grass huts. In some areas, the Mikea still use the bark of baobab trees to form the foundation of their huts.

 • a elderly couple listening to an museum-like radio in a remote village along the Chindwin. Water, the source of life for so many during the drought period often turns into disaster during the monsoon season, as the water level occassionally rises by ten meters. Certain villages are flooded regularly. 3 years ago, the water rose to the second floor of some houses, to visit relatives was only possible by boat.
